Since we last left our hero (Oliver Perez) he was struggling to find playing time within the Harrisburg clubhouse, going almost a month in between starts. Now it seems as though Perez has been given a spot in the starting rotation and has been pitching on a regular 5-day's rest. Spawned by his performance last night, which could be considered one of his best starts of the year by far, let's take a look at how he has been pitching lately, via his last 3 starts.
July 27th - 5.2 Innings vs. Bowie
This start was a mixed bag for Perez, though at first glance it looks as though he did really well. He went 5.2 Innings for a no decision (the team scored runs after he left), and only gave up 6 hits and 1 Earned Run. The downside to what was almost a "quality start" was that he walked 5 batters while only striking out 3.
July 2nd - 5.0 Innings vs. Reading
Building off of a strong start on the 27th, Perez put together a gem for the Senators and left after 5 innings with a 3-1 lead (a game the Sens would go on to lose 8-4 thanks to a bullpen meltdown). In this appearance, Ollie was able to flip the walks and strikeouts from his last start (5 k's and 3 bb). He gave up 3 hits, one of which was a solo shot against Tuffy Gosewisch (seriously), a catcher for the Phillies.
July 7th - 6.2 Innings vs. Erie
This was Ollie's best start since going a 6 inning, 5 hit, 5 k, 0 run outing on May 29th. Sunday afternoon he showed flashes of brilliance, going 6.2 innings, allowing just 4 hits and 1 run, which was a solo homer by the SeaWolves DH Brandon Douglas. Perez picked up his first AA win since that May 29 outing.
This year Oliver Perez has pitched, and started, 11 games for the AA Harrisburg Senators for a total of 53.1 innings. In those appearances he has only given up more than 3 runs once, and that was after a 15 day layoff.
Total Stats: 53.1 IP. 11 Starts. 3-2 Record. 3.04 ERA. 1.294 WHIP. 37 K. 17 BB.
Given these last 3 starts, it appears that Ollie is finally settling in and getting comfortable on the mound again. We will help you stay tuned to his progress, because you just might be seeing him in the majors come September 1.

Ollie-Watch
We here at Capitol Baseball like to follow the redemption stories. Not sure whether or not these former stars are going to be able to make it back to the majors is just thrilling for us to watch. We have been bringing Wang-Watch, but the first edition was our Ollie-Watch - which ended up jinxing Perez to the Disabled List. Well, Ollie has returned to action after his several week-long stint on the DL. Here's how he fared.
July 2nd vs. the New Britian Rock Cats
4.2 IP. 7 H. 3 R. 2 ER. 2 BB. 4 K. Pretty solid outing for right off of the DL.
His stats for the year thus far are...
2.48 ERA. 2-1 W-L. 1.17 WHIP. 25 K. 5 BB. .261 BAA (Batting Average Against).
The only concern I have thus far is that I'm not sure what his velocity has been - though he seems to be getting solid results. Being a LHP, I wouldn't be surprised to see him called up at some point this year to help our bullpen (especially with Burnett and Slaten's struggles). It sure would be great to see Perez beating the Mets, who are paying him $12 Million this year.

Ollie-Watch: Taking A Flier [UPDATE]
During the past few years, one of the worst pitchers in the National League played for the New York Mets. After two years of 6.81 ERA and a WHIP over 1.90, the Mets decided that it was finally time to eat 12$ million and release Oliver Perez. Boosted by relationships within the Nationals organization, the Mexican 29 year-old LHP signed a minor league contract with the club on March 23rd.
After reporting to Extended Spring Training, Perez's velocity jumped up to the low-90s (according to reports) as opposed to the mid/upper 80s he had been throwing in Port St. Lucie with the Mets. Eventually, after enough work fixing his mechanics, it was time for Perez to be assigned to a club. So come mid-May Perez was sent to AA Harrisburg to start the trek back to the Majors. Of course, Perez will be paid the minimum by the Nats this year, while the Mets still owe him $12 Million. Which begs the question, will he make it to Nats Park in 2011? Let's take a look at the numbers.
Since his May callup, Perez has started 5 games with pretty impressive results.
May 19: 5 IP. 1 H. 1 R. 0 ER. 2 BB. 3 K. Win.
May 25: 1 IP. 1 H. 1 R. 1 ER. 0 BB. 1 K. (Suspended after 1 inning due to rain)
May 29: 6 IP. 5 H. 0 R. 0 ER. 0 BB. 5 K. Win.
June 4: 7 IP. 8 H. 3 R. 3 ER. 1 BB. 7 K. Loss.
June 11: 5.1 IP. 7 H. 3 R. 2 ER. 0 BB. 7 K.
That puts his stats on the year at...
2-1 W-L
2.22 ERA
1.027 WHIP
7.00 SO/BB ratio
Granted these numbers are against AA competition, but if these numbers were in Major League action this would give Perez career best numbers in all three categories; better than in 2004 when he won 12 games with a 2.98 ERA and 1.153 WHIP.
Perez's next start is scheduled for this evening against the Altoona Curve, and we will see if he can continue his comeback. With the current state of flux of the Nats Bullpen (12 different relievers used so far), it is entirely possible that Perez may make an appearance at Nationals Park in the next few months, provided that he continues his resurgence.
We will be paying attention to the next few months of Ollie Perez's performance in a little segment I like to call, Ollie-Watch. So stay tuned.

As of early this morning, Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post reports that Oliver Perez has been placed on the DL. So much for paying attention to his start tonight.

Nats sign... OLIVER PEREZ?!?!
That's right folks. Multiple sources are now reporting that the Washington Nationals have inexplicably signed Oliver Perez to a minor league deal.
As if the national sports media already didn't have enough reason to rag on the Nats, the front office has decided (apparently upon recommendation of pitching coordinator Spin Williams) that it'd be a great idea to sign the former Mets pitcher. The same former Mets pitcher that refused to go to minor league camp and posted an 8.38 ERA in 9.2 innings in New York camp this spring. The same former Mets pitcher that went 0-5 with a 6.80 ERA in 2010. The same former Mets pitcher that appeared in 4 games against the Nats last year and allowed the 2010 Nats (not your offensive powerhouse) to post a .39o OBP. The same former Mets pitcher that is still owed $12 million from the New York club for this season, and they let him go anyways.
We understand it's a minor league deal so there is minimal money involved. I mean, come on, he's already guaranteed $12 million this year. He could work for free for the Nats. This move is confusing to us, though. One thing is turning into a pattern: Adam Kilgore has already said that this would be Scott Boras' eleventh client currently on the Nationals payroll. Boras and Rizzo must really be getting close.
Don't despair, there will be plenty more on this in the days and weeks to come. There are so many jokes here, we don't even know where to start.
